The Heroic Gardens Festival was established to raise funds for Auckland City Mission’s Herne Bay House which provided care and respite for people with HIV/AIDS. For 16 years the event showcased gay and lesbian-owned gardens and the garden creators.

Since Herne Bay House’s closure, the Festival was transferred to support Mercy Hospice Auckland in the same spirit. The Festival now includes gardens created by both the LGBT community and other supporters of Hospice.

A major feature of the Festival is that the owners/creators of the gardens are present for visitors to talk to and answer questions.

Each year the Festival includes a selection of new gardens along with a changing mix of modern and traditional gardens which have appeared in previous years.
